| The Institut d’Estudis Catalans (Institute of Catalan Studies, IEC)
was founded in 1907. It is an «academic, scientific and cultural corporation
whose main goal is scientific research, especially research that involves
all the elements of Catalan culture».
The corporation has its main headquarters in Barcelona, but its sphere of action covers all the geographical areas with Catalan language and culture. In 1922, the IEC was accepted as a full member of the International Union of Academies (IUA). Today the Institut brings together a large part of the scientific elite of the Catalan-speaking world. The members are distributed among the five sections of this institution: History and Archaeology, Biological Sciences, Science and Technology, Philology, Philosophy and Social Sciences. The IEC is highly respected by the public powers, and has a powerful influence on the Catalan society. |
